Excellent product
Packaging was top notch! I thought FOR SURE there would be some damage to my bookcases, but because South Shore was so thorough with packaging- not ONE bit of damage!! Easy to put together

3 pieces were broken.. Completely worthless.. When I put one broken piece back, it just split into 2 pieces.. I'm bringing the entire package to my local Walmart

    White book shelf
Nice white bookshelf. Used this to put shoes and purses. Assembly was very easy. I didn't give this 5 stars because some of the shelves came cracked and chipped and because you could only adjust 3 out of the 6 shelves. The other shelves are fixed into the bookshelf and cannot be adjusted limiting what type of objects you can put and where.

    Love this bookcase!
This is my second and am going to order a third. They are for hobby supplies of which I have many. They are easy to assemble, sturdy and great looking bookcases. Great buy for the price!

Good product but some pieces have broken edges or corners
Overall the product looks fine, and the price is low. However, three pieces came with broken edges and corners. So I rate is as 4 stars. Otherwise it is 5.

    Flimsy cardboard backing, not particleboard
South Shore Smart Basics 5-Shelf Bookcase is advertised as "Manufactured from recycled CARB-compliant laminated particleboard." We assumed this meant the entire product was 100% particleboard. However, when we opened the package, the backing was a long piece of white cardboard, folded into a tri-fold. We contacted South Shore to find out if the real particleboard backing was somehow missing from the package. They insisted the backing was particleboard and even described it as being taped at the folds so it could be opened up into a large 71" x 30 backing. There is no tape anywhere. It is clearly not particleboard. It is cardboard -- bends easily, doesn't look like it will hold up the frame or shelves. They refused to believe that the backing is cardboard. We will return to Walmart tomorrow. The description is misleading and South Shore customer service was extremely unhelpful. Last time we purchase from this company.

    Worked for me
Had someone put 3 of them together and bolt to the studs for security. Photo says it all.

Good value and quality for the price
The standard I am comparing this unit to is the Billy bookcase sold by Ikea. I like them, I own many of them, I wanted to purchase another for my daughter's room. Unfortunately, while Ikea is happy to ship a mattress to my home, they won't ship a bookcase, at least not a Billy bookcase. Walmart, on the other hand, would. So I bought this unit from Walmart's Web site. Pros... The unit was well packaged and arrived in excellent condition. Came with all tools and even a few extra pieces. The assembly instructions were clear and I was able to get it put together inside of half an hour. The finish was clean and unmarked and it looks good in place. The shelves seem sturdy enough to hold my daughter's books without bowing in the middle. I would guestimate that this shelf is about six inches wider than a comparably priced Billy shelf from Ikea and holds more books. Cons... Well, it's not a Billy. The build quality is not the same. I am not certain how long the finish will last with a lot of use. The pegs holding the movable shelves in place are plastic instead of metal like you would find on a Billy. The unit doesn't feel quite as solid, but that could be due to the larger size. The biggest defect is the lack of notch at the back of the unit to accommodate baseboard trim. Billy bookshelves have them, the Walmart shelves don't. Had to cut my own notches in. Shipping... I live in Hanna, Alberta, which is serviced by the main courier companies. I was therefore a bit surprised to have my delivery handled by Highway 13, a provincial trucking company. They provide excellent service, but they are EXPENSIVE. The cost of shipping an item this size would normally exceed the value of the unit. I am guessing Walmart must send quite a volume through them. In any case, the Highway 13 employee was helpful and courteous as they usually are. No complaints here. Conclusion... This unit is a good value for what you spend on it. If you're so picky that nothing but a Billy shelf from Ikea will do, you'd best go to Ikea. But... If you don't want to drive a five hour round trip and wind through a huge warehouse in a fashion that leaves you feel like cattle in a packing plant, consider ordering from Walmart. I did and I'm happy enough with this purchase that I would consider buying more.

    Great Value!
I was looking for inexpensive bookshelves that would show off my collectables rather than the shelves themselves. My living room is relatively dark, so I applied a light colored contact paper to the back panel before nailing it on. It reflected the available light and made everything stand out perfectly. I like these shelves so much (I bought 3) that I'm going to buy one more to balance the room. As far as ease of putting them together; it took me longer with the 1st one, and I screwed the top shelf on upside down (not clear in the instructions), but easy to correct. The other shelves went together in about 15 min each...by myself.

Exceeded Expectations by a long shot!
Maybe if you're the kind of person who can afford a real wood book shelf this will be a disappointing buy, but for those of us who actually need to shop at places like WalMart, this is an exceptional product. For a DIY particle and laminate book shelf it is really sturdy, being secured by 12 heavy-duty screws at top and bottom and on the fixed shelf, over 60 nails in the backing, and the cross pieces which add a classy finish as well as durability. For one person alone the assembly is pretty labor-intensive, but it can still be done and probably in an hour or two tops with minimal tools or know-how. All of the screw holes are pre-tapped, extra hardware is included, and the pictographic instructions are easy to follow. The only real potential for frustration is nailing on the back straight. I did have some issues with shipping, but nothing that seemed indicative of more than a one-time problem and it did serve to highlight how well packaged this product is. Even with the obvious mistreatment of my package, the pieces didn't get a scratch in the well-stacked, tightly shrinkwrapped, and padded box. The only real con- barely- is that there is some very minor bowing to the shelves at well above the recommended capacity, but there is no indication that will get any worse or that they will give out. Even without the wall bracket (also included and recommended) the shelf is well-balanced and true, does not lean even against the wall and on carpet.
