Can't Get Beater Bar to operate? Read this!!
I've been using the Dyson Animal 2 for two months now and love it. Powerful suction and several great attachments. But getting the brush/beater bar to engage on carpeting took hours to figure out. I assembled the sweeper as instructed on the (visuals only - no written instructions at all for assembly.) But when I plugged the machine in and pressed the brush bar "On" button after turning the sweeper on, nothing happened. I tried everything I could think of, and was about 10 seconds away from calling the Dyson Help line for assistance. But I decided to pour through the Operating Manual one more time. And then on page 10 of the English language section of the manual, under the heading "Carpets or Hard Floors, under one of the 8 bullet points, I discovered this: "the brush bar will not rotate when the appliance is upright." I'd been leaving the machine upright when instead, it will only operate properly in the machine is reclined. Bingo!! Problem finally solved. I really do think that Dyson should make this critical usage element MUCH, MUCH more prominent. Trying to discover what the problem was was like going on a treasure hunt.

Cannot push this vacuum!
I was excited to purchase this vacuum today as I have a golden retriever and alot of fur around the house. I am sooo disappointed that I can hardly push it over my carpet. I will be returning this tomorrow!!!

    Not for carpet ???!!
    I liked my 1st Dyson animal so well I purchased a 2nd one when I needed to. Worked great on the original carpet we had in the house. When we replaced that carpet w/something that has slightly higher pile it failed miserably. You have to push/pull against the suction. I was told repeatedly when contacting for assistance that the vacuum is not meant for carpet! It's too powerful! Then why do you advertise: Powerful suction across carpets and hard floors with Ball™ technology for improved maneuverability Upright vacuum cleaner for all surfaces powerful suction with Ball technology Trying to use this now is painful - literally. My shoulders and back scream at me when I do. This is an expensive product and should work as advertised or be replaced w/something that does. Dyson should correct their advertising to reflect what they are going to tell you later when it doesn't work properly.

    Suction is too powerful
    The dyson works too well that it makes it so hard to use. I have had mine for about 2 months and the suction is so powerful that it sticks to the floor and is hard to push and pull. Also, because of it sticking so close to the floor, it snowplows cat litter instead of sucking up the cat litter. The vacuum works great on carpets, yet for the floors its a struggle. My cat leaves a lot of litter and i have to lift up the vacuum or get the hose to be sure i get all of the litter. Yet it works amazing on fur!

    Powerful, but awkward
    If you want to use the hose, you have to unravel the entire power cord. The hose is so inflexible and awkward, I stopped using it. It cleans well, but it's unnecessarily awkward. Really disappointed that Dyson is choosing to go full battery powered.

    Suction is great - everything else needs work
    I have had this vacuum for a while and I'm trying to like it (gave up on loving it). The suction is tops, I don't think you can beat it with any other vacuum. The issues: 1) because the suction is so great, you have to use the separate floor attachment on throw rugs, there is no modulation of the powerful suction; 2) in using the separate floor attachment with the hose and plastic wand, it is sooo short it is BACK BREAKING. I am only 5'3" and I wish they would make a longer hose, or plastic wand; 3) when switching from the floor attachment back to the main vacuum, there is no place on the vacuum to hook this attachment. As I write this, my back is killing me and the attachment cannot be found. I live in a two story 2300 square foot house that has some wall to wall carpet (that is what this vacuum works best on), tile and wood floors with throw rugs. Most of the rooms are wood with throw rugs . . . I will continue to seach for the attachment. At least in writing this I got to sit and help my back out a bit. Dyson can do better (my other non Dyson vacuum is so much better in those two areas (place for attachments, length of hose/plastic wand, but not in suction)
