Flat irons

Flat irons are hair appliances that help straighten hair, reduce static, and tame frizz. Flat irons can also be used for crimping or curling in some hair styles.

Flat iron tips

  • Use a ceramic flat iron for straightening.
  • Use a tourmaline-ceramic flat iron to control static.
  • Use thermal protection on your hair before using a flat iron.
  • Avoid straightening wet hair. This essentially steams your hair and damages it.
  • Use the lower flat-iron heat setting for brittle or damaged hair.
Work the flat iron from the root to the ends of the hair. Work in sections as you heat your hair, so you never have too much or too little hair in the appliance.

If you have too much hair between the clamps, the inner hair strands won't heat up enough to be thoroughly straightened. If you clamp too little hair, you may create creases or overheat hair strands.
